Letter to UC-wide IT leadership

Dear ITLC,

Because of the constrained budget situation for UC this year, there has been concern about travel, attendance and event costs associated with proceeding with the University of California Computing Services Conference (UCCSC) this year. As you know,  the ITLC has been sensitive to these budget concerns, discussed the pros and cons of proceeding with the UCCSC and concluded that it is of value to proceed, perhaps especially so, in this tightened budget environment.

Additionally, in recognition of the uncertainties present in the current economic climate combined with the continued need for training, the UCCSC2009-Focus on Security planning team has taken extraordinary action to deliver the most valuable content while minimizing costs. Specific measures include:

· Offering practical, hands-on training opportunities in addition to standard informational lectures. A draft schedule, including the descriptive titles of over 60 sessions, is available at uccsc2009.ucdavis.edu/sessions.pdf.

· Engaging professional trainers, including Apple, Moskowitz, ISInc. and noted presenters from MacWorld and the RSA security conference, to host sessions at no additional cost to attendees.

· Setting the registration fee at $115 and reducing registration fees by an additional $50 for the first 100 out-of-town registrants who opt to stay in on-campus housing and waiving the registration fee altogether for presenters.

Given our ITLC consensus to proceed with the UCCSC and the exceptional planning by the organizing committee, I am writing to ask that you distribute this message and encourage your managers to support individuals in their units who wish to engage in this critical, low-cost training and information-sharing opportunity.  Registration will open in early April for UCCSC2009-Focus on Security, which will take place at UC Davis on June 16-17, 2009.

UCCSC is certainly a long-standing University of California tradition that has provided essential information-sharing and networking opportunities for technical staff and managers from each of our campuses for nearly 30 years. In the current budget environment, we are recognizing the particular importance of coming together and sharing solutions. I believe we can all agree that UC Davis has developed a creative and thoughtful approach to providing an affordable and valuable learning event in times of severe budget constraints and that we can look forward to a successful 2009 UCCSC with active system-wide participation.

Sincerely,

The 2009 ITLC Executive Committee
